I'm live blogging our district in-service with Rich Allen on brain based strategies and presenting. If you want to learn more about Rich Allen you can do that at Greenlight Education.
Here I am with Rich after the training. We had a fun discussion about twitter during lunch and he was cool enough to honor my techno-learning style and not freak out that I took notes via twitter.
- 9:25 AM: mamaestes New blog post: In-Service with Rich Allen - Day 2 divalatte.com
- 9:27 AM: mamaestes #richallen - the form questions can engage or shut down responses. Open vs. closed questions...if u don't get answer u want - review the ?
- 9:29 AM: mamaestes #richallen broad, open questions get the most # of people who get to play along - keeping participation up!
- 9:31 AM: mamaestes #richallen - watch your directions - don't limit participation (shake 4 hands...instead shake hands with those around you).
- 9:32 AM: mamaestes #richallen - closed directions (find a group o 4 - no....find group of 3, 4, 5 or so) keeps participants from stressing over imposed limits
- 9:32 AM: mamaestes #richallen open questions and directives allow everyone to be successful - success breeds success
- 9:33 AM: mamaestes #richallen closed questions have their place but not when trying to generate conversation and collaboration.
- 9:38 AM: mamaestes RT @rrodgers: Shortie Film Festival for students ages 7-18--apply by April 9th (http://bit.ly/1PH9LL)
- 10:54 AM: mamaestes #richallen doing fantastic memory exercise using motion, audio, etc. Where was this when I was teaching SAT vocab...awesom!
- 10:55 AM: mamaestes #richallen that would be awesome!
- 10:57 AM: mamaestes #richallen - ways to use the memory tricks - things can be memorized as a list in any content area (which sets up pegs for hanging info on)
- 10:58 AM: mamaestes #richallen you don't have to memorize everything - just trigger points that evoke other memories and connections
- 10:59 AM: mamaestes #richallen stress causes us to forget (chemically) - walk in the room for test - go blank
- 11:01 AM: mamaestes #richallen student comment - best part of class - memory pegs on day 1 - because I learned I'm not stupid.
- 11:03 AM: mamaestes #richallen second memory aide - movement - anchor it with a movement of some kind
- 11:06 AM: mamaestes #richallen 3rd memory aide - connections
- 11:07 AM: mamaestes #richallen we never forget - we remember at an inconvenient time. (you hooked it to the wrong thing!)
- 11:09 AM: mamaestes #richallen peg things 2 relevant items - if u have 2 remember something frm home - peg it 2 something at home - doorknob, refrigerator, etc.
- 11:09 AM: mamaestes #richallen study in the room where you will test so you can peg things to the place you'll be when you need them!
- 11:15 AM: mamaestes #richallen 4th memory aide - create - movements, wiggles, acronyms, pneumonic devices (did I spell that right?)
- 11:16 AM: mamaestes #richallen do you say that you've COVERED the material - look up the dictionary definition! To shroud in darkness or bury in a hole!
- 11:29 AM: mamaestes #richallen - teaching the scientific method using a genie in a bottle...if you've seen it...you'd get it...wow! Sharing that w/ my teachers!
- 11:33 AM: mamaestes #richallen a good learning environment should rock - be an exciting place 2 come to! Want ur class to rock - watch kids when not in ur room.
- 11:34 AM: mamaestes #richallen whatever kids do for fun, that they enjoy - should be integrated into the classroom - movement, play acting, music, singing, etc.
- 11:35 AM: mamaestes #richallen sometimes we forget - teachers make all OTHER professions possible.
- 11:39 AM: mamaestes #richallen if telling isn't teaching...what is?
- 11:43 AM: mamaestes #richallen lively learning lingers longer
- 11:43 AM: mamaestes #richallen Simply Move - get them moving around - Class rule - stay in your seat...cruel?
- 11:44 AM: mamaestes #richallen climb on the back of the energy your kids bring to class and ride the wave to instruct!
- 11:56 AM: mamaestes #richallen Adapt Adjust Apply - nothing is one-size fits all - make it your own. Take good ideas and make them fit your kids/needs
- 12:00 PM: mamaestes #richallen getting great ideas for movement in the classroom - will blog in more detail later.
- 12:00 PM: mamaestes #richallen crime scenes to teach measurement - too cool!
- 12:01 PM: mamaestes #richallen to learn students must TALK - how many teachers do you know would have a heart attack at that statement?
- 12:03 PM: mamaestes #richallen great idea - teach in lecture-ettes - get a 10 minute sand timer and let ur kids talk when ur times up (and let them hold u 2 it)
- 12:04 PM: mamaestes #richallen - give kids a plastic microphone and ask them to interview each other about what they've learned.
- 12:13 PM: mamaestes #richallen use doodles on PURPOSE in notes 2 help kids remember concepts w/ a visual allow use of pictures on test 2 demo concepts.
- 12:16 PM: mamaestes #richallen powerpoint used to show examples and humor rather than text being read to the group - use powerpoint to emphasize...not tell.
- 12:19 PM: mamaestes #richallen are you showing your preparation or doing a presentation - how are you using your PowerPoint?
- 12:20 PM: mamaestes #richallen keep your video clips SHORT!
- 12:20 PM: mamaestes #richallen - tell people what to look for before u show the video - if you don't set up a primer they miss the point or lose the power of it
- 12:21 PM: mamaestes #richallen - one idea per slide (or less - ha ha) work in concepts not blocks of explanatory text.
- 12:21 PM: mamaestes #richallen - when showing images - stop talking...let people take it in...pause for visuals. Let people get it before you take off again.
- 12:23 PM: mamaestes #richallen - learn good visual techniques - rule of thirds, etc. Apply them to your PPT slides
- 12:24 PM: mamaestes #richallen avoid busy backgrounds - from signal 2 noise - the strength of signal drowns out most of noise. the focus should be the point.
- 12:25 PM: mamaestes #richallen - if using pictures maximize them completely so the focus is on the picture not the surrounding noise. More impactful.
- 12:27 PM: mamaestes #richallen if you only have a hammer - EVERY problem looks like a nail
